The aim of present study was to determine hepatoprotective and antioxidant activities of Nelumbo nucifera leaf extract against CCl -induced hepatotoxicity in female albino rats. Alanine aminotransaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), albumin (ALB), total protein (TP), total bilirubin (TB), urea and total cholesterol (TC) were estimated in serum of rats. The level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activity of catalase (CAT) in liver and kidney tissues. It was established that the administration of Nelumbo nucifera leaf extract at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg body weight significantly reduced the levels of ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, urea, total cholesterol, and at the same time, significantly increased the concentrations of ALB and TP in serum compared with the control. Furthermore, administration of Nelumbo nucifera leaf extract at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg bw produced a significant decrease in the level of MDA, while a significant increase in the activity of CAT in liver and kidney tissues. Our results suggested that NNLE has hepatoprotective and antioxidant activities against CCl -induced hepatotoxicity.
