The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic ethanol consumption on the reactivity of small arteries supplying blood to the brain stem, small intestine, skeletal muscle and skin. Chronic alcoholization (consumption of 20 % ethanol for 12 weeks) resulted in body weight reduction along with right ventricular and kidney hypertrophy, as well as in a decrease in systolic blood pressure. Contractile activity of isolated arterial segments was studied in isometric regimen. Arterial relaxation responses to acetylcholine and NO donor sodium nitroprusside did not differ in ethanol-consumed and control groups. Along with that, the effects of alcoholization on arterial contractile responses depended on the organ type: an increase in the arterial contractility was observed in brain and mesentery, but skin and skeletal muscle arteries demonstrated decreased contractility, which can lead to systemic hypotension.
