The purpose of this article was to study the effect of Nelumbo nucifera (sacred lotus) seeds extract on the rats plasma lipid profile. The work was carried out at Molecular Biology, Genetics and Biochemistry Department, Faculty of biology, Astrakhan State University (Russia). 92 female albino rats (weighing from 200 g to 240 g each) were taken and used for the investigation. The experiment lasted for a month and the animals were divided into three groups (Control group (Nacl), Nelumbo nucifera group, normal control). Generally, rats fed with the Nelumbo nucifera showed significantly lower levels of total cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerol (TG), and total lipid (T L) in comparison with control animals. Thus, Nelumbo nucifera may be useful in formulations for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and for improving the lipid profile by lowering TC, total TG, and total lipid.
