The article relates that laryngotracheitis is a virus-bacterial disease accompanied by constriction of the upper respiratory passages. Before the bacterial disease is attached, the larynx is affected by such viruses as influenza and adenoviruses. These are generally followed by muscle spasms and edema of the mucous larynx, which cause the larynx to constrict and the breath, consequently, to become visibly obstructed. Laryngotracheitis tends to lead to tracheobronchitis and pneumonia (chronic laryngotracheitis can bring about lingering pneumonia). Moreover, it can cause children to have bronchiolitis. As to progressive respiratory failure, inadequate diagnostics and lack of urgent measures often cause a lethal outcome. The paper presents recommendations for rendering first (and urgent) aid to children suffering from laryngotracheitis at the pre-admission stage, with the treatment to be continued upon their admission to hospital. The document relates that a diagnosis of ’acute laryngitis’ has the code J04.0 ICD-10, ’acute laryngotracheitis’s J04.2, ’acute obstructive laryngitis’ J05, and ’chronic laryngitis’ and ’chronic laryngotracheitis’ J37.0 and J37.1 respectively. The blueprint concludes that acute obstruction of the upper respiratory passages (for larynx lumen constriction with respiratory distress and development of acute respiratory failure) should be dealt with in the pre-admission stage and be followed by immediate diagnostics and treatment.
